The Division of Student Affairs is pleased to announce the 19th Annual Jack Beyerl
Student Affairs Lecture. Diane R. Dean, associate professor for Higher
Education Administration and Policy, Illinois State University, and
co-author of the book Generation on a Tightrope: A Portrait of Today's
College Student, will speak at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 27, in Student
Center Cardinal Hall.

An understanding of today's college
students is vital to the effectiveness of our nation's colleges and
universities. As Generation on a Tightrope clearly reveals, today's
students need a very different education than the undergraduates who
came before them. Examining college student expectations, aspirations,
academics, attitudes, values, beliefs, social life, and politics,
co-authors Arthur Levine and Diane R. Dean paint an accurate portrait of
today's students. Timely and comprehensive, the book offers educators,
researchers, policymakers, and others guidance and a much-needed grasp
of the forces shaping the experiences of current undergraduates. The
book is based on new research of 5,000 college students and student
affairs practitioners from 270 diverse college campuses. It explores the
similarities and differences between today's generation of students and
previous generations.
