Faculty Seminar on Teaching First-Year Students, Spring 2014

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Freshman Connections and the Office of Educational Excellence are pleased to offer a three-part faculty development seminar to support Ball State faculty members in developing learner-centered pedagogies for first-year students. The sessions will be Wednesdays from 3-4:30 p.m. on February 19th, March 19th, and April 16th in BL 201.

Focus
Participants will read and discuss Developing Learner-Centered Teaching: A Practical Guide for Faculty, by Phyllis Blumberg, with a particular focus on the roles of content and the instructor.

Benefits
Beyond the principle benefit of improving one’s pedagogy, participants will receive free copies of the text used in the seminar and a small honorarium. The interdisciplinary and interpersonal connections participants make in this seminar will have lasting professional and personal effects.

Outcome
Informed by what s/he learns, each participant will prepare a brief report describing a pedagogical innovation s/he will implement during the 2014 calendar year. This report should include documents that will be used in that implementation. It will be due at the final (April 16th) session.
