2012 Faculty Seminar on Teaching First-Year Students

Freshman Connections and the Office of Educational Excellence are pleased to offer a three-part faculty development seminar to support Ball State faculty members in developing learner-centered pedagogies for first-year students. The sessions will be Mondays from 3-4:30 p.m. on September 17th, October 15th, and November 12th in BL 201.

Participants will read and discuss Developing Learner-Centered Teaching: a Practical Guide for Faculty, by Phyllis Blumberg, with a particular focus on the chapter on early and formative evaluation of students.

Beyond the principle benefit of improving one’s pedagogy, participants will receive free copies of the text used in the seminar and a small honorarium. The interdisciplinary and interpersonal connections participants make in this seminar will have lasting professional and personal effects.

Informed by what s/he learns, each participant will prepare a brief report describing a pedagogical innovation s/he will implement during the 2013 calendar year. This report should include documents that will be used in that implementation. It will be due at the final (November 12th) session.
